چکیده

ESO’s PRIMA (Phase-Referenced Imaging and Micro-arcsecond Astrometry) facility at the VLT Interferometer on Cerro Paranal in Chile is expected to be fully operational in only a few years from now. With PRIMA/VLTI, it will then be possible to perform relative astrometry with an accuracy of the order of 10 microarcseconds over angles of about 10 arcseconds. The main science driver for this astrometric capability is a systematic search for extrasolar planets around nearby stars. Target stars as well as reference and calibration stars for this astrometric planet search have to be very carefully chosen in order to make the measurements robust and effective. Various aspects of this search for suitable target, reference and calibration stars are discussed.

Radio Astrometric Detection and Characterization of Extra-Solar Planets: A White Paper Submitted to the NSF ExoPlanet Task Force

The extraordinary astrometric accuracy of radio interferometry creates an important and unique opportunity for the discovery and characterization of exoplanets. Currently, the Very Long Baseline Array can routinely achieve better than 100 μas accuracy, and can approach 10 μas with careful calibration. We describe here RIPL, the Radio Interferometric PLanet search, a new program with the VLBA an...

The ESPRI project: astrometric exoplanet search with PRIMA

PRIMA, the instrument for Phase-Referenced Imaging and Micro-arcsecond Astrometry at the VLTI, is currently being developed at ESO. PRIMA will implement the dual-feed capability, at first for two UTs or ATs, to enable simultaneous interferometric observations of two objects that are separated by up to 1 arcmin. PRIMA is designed to perform narrowangle astrometry in K-band with two ATs as well a...

Planets Around M-dwarfs – Astrometric Detection and Orbit Characterization

There are compelling reasons to search for planets around late M-dwarfs: current planet surveys have not been able to target these optically-faint stars, and the reduced primary stellar mass improves planet detection sensitivity for new techniques which can target these stars. In this white paper we argue that one can employ aging 2 m telescopes for dedicated astrometric programs in the spirit ...

Blind Date: Using Proper Motions to Determine the Ages of Historical Images

Astrometric calibration is based on patterns of cataloged stars and therefore effectively assumes a particular epoch, which can be substantially incorrect for historical images. With the known proper motions of stars we can “run back the clock” to an approximation of the night sky in any given year, and in principle the year that best fits stellar patterns in any given image is an estimate of t...

The Effects of Multiple Companions on the Efficiency of the SIM Planet Searches

The Space Interferometry Mission (SIM) is expected to make precise astrometric measurements that can be used to detect low mass planets around nearby stars. Since most nearby stars are members of multiple star systems, many stars will have a measurable acceleration due to their companion, which must be included when solving for astrometric parameters and searching for planetary perturbations. A...
